Wood types vary greatly in color, price, durability and appearance. Prices are constantly adjusted with availability and popularity. Below is a list of commonly used species with a short description and price point.
Wood Species
Alder- A commonly used medium density wood. This light brown/reddish wood is often stained to avoid discoloration over time. It is considerably softer than other hardwoods, but is attractively priced and widely available. $
Knotty Alder- Same as above, add lots of knots for a rustic feel. $
Cherry- This beautiful hardwood is a personal favorite. It is dense enough to avoid marring, but not overly heavy. It accepts stain well but doesn’t need it as it turns a rich red/brown color over a few short years. $$
Hickory- This is a very hard wood that will withstand some abuse. The dramatic grain and color variations make it a species that you either love or very much do not love. It is full of yellows, browns, and creamy white. A bit difficult to work with, but definitely durable. $$
Rustic Hickory- Same as above, add knots and wild grain for the rustic look. $$
Maple- Hard maple is a light colored (almost white) wood with beautiful grain and excellent durability. Stains well and paints well. A great option. $$
Oak- Inexpensive and widely available, this wood is well known for its durability. The open grain makes the finish more pitted and uneven than other species. $
Walnut- specifically black walnut, you are looking at some of the prettiest wood on earth for my money, and it costs money. By far the most expensive on the list, it is considered a luxury wood and the end result shows it. $$$
Sapele- This is a great species from Africa which is often used in place of mahogany. Its dark reddish brown mixed with streaks of gold gives a distinct look. It is a widely available and a middle of the road price. It is durable and great to work with. $$
Door and Drawer Styles
Door and drawer styles are as varied as the species. The best way to pick this is to peruse the photos. Different styles range from basic to highly detailed, and are priced accordingly. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, so please use the gallery as a resource and enjoy!
Hardware and Storage Options
Storage options are also seemingly limitless. These include items such as garbage pullouts, pot and pan hangers, dividers in drawers, cookie sheet dividers, spice racks and more. The pictures below showcase a few of my favorite options.
Hardware- Our standard cabinet doors are hinged on soft-close euro style hinges, and drawers are mounted on soft-close side mount glides. These hinges are great for adjustability and can be replaced with very little effort. Side mount glides are strong and reliable, and get smoother and quieter with weight and time. Under mount drawer slides are also an option if preferred.
Finishes
All our cabinets are finished with multiple protective coats of lacquer providing a beautifully smooth feel and lasting durability. There are three finishes with different price points. These are painted, stained, or clear finishes.
Clear finish- A clear finish is simply a lacquered finish over the bare wood, enhancing the natural beauty of the species you’ve selected. This allows the wood to change color over the years as most species will. For example, Cherry with a clear finish will change its color drastically within 5 to 10 years turning a beautiful burnt red color. Our finishes are Sherwin Williams products.
Stained- Stain is a great way to enhance the look of your cabinets without losing the details in the wood. We use “old masters” wiping stain, which provides a rich, uniform color. Use the link below to view their website for more information and color options. Staining is an involved process, which does increase the price. However, stain can enhance a more inexpensive species of wood, which may be a price savings in the end. A stained cabinet will also stay the same color without fading for years to come. Stained cabinets will also be coated in the same clear lacquer used in the clear finish process.
Old Masters Wiping Stain Colors
Painted- Our “painted” cabinets are actually sprayed with a “pigmented lacquer”. Any color at Sherwin Williams (link below) can be made into this colored lacquer. This is an excellent finish, it is durable, easily cleaned, and beautiful, and it comes in different sheens from high gloss to matte. It is the most costly option for a finish, as the process and the material itself adds cost.
Boxing
“Boxing” refers to the body of the cabinets. This varies greatly across the spectrum of cabinets in the world, and it is highly important to the longevity, durability, and beauty of the cabinet interiors. We use only the highest quality maple ply wood for our cabinets known as “NOVA”. Maple is known for its durability and bright color which enhances the visibility inside your cabinet. The anti microbial finish on all cabinet interiors is stain resistant and easily cleaned with a damp cloth.
Upper cabinets with glass doors can have interiors painted or stained to match the color of the cabinets if desired.
